Undersecretary of Humanitarian Affairs for the UN, Jan Egeland
"If, actually, the foreign assistance of many countries now is 0.1 or 0.2 percent of the gross national income, I think that is stingy, really," he said. "I don't think that is very generous."
My message to Mr. Egeland:
Bite me. As far as actual amounts go, the US gives more than any other nation. Shove your holier-than-thou attitude.
I have no problem with private foreign aid but have never been a fan of foreign aid on a national level. Still, when we're giving such massive quantities of aid voluntarily, the proper response is "Thank you!" not "You're stingy! Give more!"
Let me say this slowly so there is no mistake.
We. Do. Not. Owe. You. One. Single. Penny.
Got it?
We continue to give not because we owe it, but because as a nation (*grumble*) we've decided to generously give to those in greater need. If these gifts are not appreciated, perhaps they should not be given at all. |
