We usually set the thermostat to keep things pretty close to ambient when we're going to be gone for a few days. Our hard-working and dedicated cat/house-sitters noticed the heat but didn't complain. We had the AC set to only kick on if the temperatures rose above 80 degrees.
When we got home, we switched it back to its regular cycle and expected it to cool off. It never did. After troubleshooting a bit, I determined that the condenser fan wasn't running, and it wasn't due to a tripped breaker or anything else I could readily determine. Everything else seemed to be operating.
We called Bassett Services Inc (found them on Angie's List). Technician came out after I got off work and immediately identified the problem as a bad capacitor in the condenser unit. The one he pulled out was swollen like a can of bad soup. He had a replacement, popped it in and got us running after just a few minutes.
Total cost was $310 which seems a little steep to me, but he did good work, quickly and at a time that worked well for me. |
