Casualty reports are still fluctuating, but current figures indicate around 21 human fatalities in addition to the death of the perpetrator. There are, as well, several dozen injuries.
I do not know reason this particular killer decided to take the lives that he or she did. Depending on the circumstances, we may never know. What I do know is that this will be used as "proof" that further gun control is necessary to "protect our children."

The killer was happy enough to break a number of laws against things such as murder, assault with a deadly weapon, attempted murder, brandishing and so forth. Indeed, they likely broke their school rules against carrying a weapon on campus. More laws would not have saved anyone at Virginia Tech.
On the other hand, one well-placed bullet from a student or faculty member may well have solved the problem before we ended up with double-digit fatalities and a national crisis. |
