Microsoft - via their Live.com front - is developing a new photo technology they call PhotoSynth. This technology uses a series of algorithms to automatically detect similarities in digital images and then maps those images in a 3D space.
This is pretty darn cool stuff. You can give it a try here. I'm particularly fond of their Rome preview.
Knowing Microsoft when this software is released it will be a bloated resource hog that only runs on Vista, but it is a pretty neat idea - assuming it actually performs as advertised. It's just a few steps from this until Google Earth and similar services allow for zooming down to near or at the street level in every major city - supported by user-submitted images. |
